The Maritime Museum Rotterdam owns an important collection, the base of which is already been laid in 1852. Prince Hendrik (1820-1879), husband of Queen Wilhelmina, promoted the birth of the "Room of Models" of the Royal Dutch Yachtclub. From this room, which was only open for clubmembers, a public municipal museum was established in 1874. This institute evolved into the Maritime Museum Rotterdam which is the oldest maritime museum in the Netherlands nowadays.
This museum resides at 1-3 Hoogstraat, Maassluis since 1979. A museum which does not only show the Smit Tugs operations, but also artifacts of other important salvage companies such as Wijsmuller, Doeksen and ITC. Next to the towage at sea attention is also paid to neighbouring towage and maritime activities, not only the inland and Rhine towage but also the off-shore industry, salvage and heavy transport.
